Disabling The Windows XP Boot Logo
Incase you didn't already know, It is possible to disable the Windows XP boot-up splash screen, although this only speeds up the boot process very slightly so there isn't a real need to use this tweak.

1. Edit boot.ini
2. Add " /noguiboot" right after "/fastdetect".
Once you reboot, the splash screen will be gone.
It can be re-enabled by removing the new switch.

1. Go to Start > run > type "diskpart".A DOS window will appear with following discription.DISKPART>

2. Then type "list volume"The result will look like : ------Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info--------------- --- -------- ---- ------ ---- ------ ----
Volume 0 F CD-ROM
Volume 1 C Window_XP NTFS Partition 7000MB Healthy System
Volume 2 D Softwares NTFS Partition 8000MB Healthy
Volume 3 E Songs NTFS Partition 8000MB Healthy

3. Suppose u wanna hide drive E then type "select volume 3"Then a message will appear in same winwods { Volume 3 is the selected volume}

4. Now type "remove letter E"Now a message will come { Diskpart Removed the Drive letter }sometime it requires the reboot the computer .Diskpart will remove the letter .Windows XP is not having capabilty to identify the unkown volume.

Your Data is safe now from all unauthorised users. To access the content of hidden Drive repeat the process mentioned above.
But in 4th step replace " remove" to "assign"i mean type "assign letter E"

first let me tell you what is setting a password in bios isthe password set at bios is asked when you start your pc even before your operating system is bootedheres the steps1.as soon as you start your pc press 'del' or 'Esc' continiously and you'll find the bios screen

2.when you spot the bios screen go to the security sectionin security section there are two option of setting password

1.admin pass - you can't del this pass in bios without knowing the password(only for advanced users)

2.user pass - you can delete bthis password from bios even if you don't know the password.

3.To set admin pass wordwrite the password in the space providedconfirm it againsave and exit.

4.To set the user passgive the old pass if enabled or write the new pass in the space providedconfirm it

now no one can start your pc w/o the pass

It's like combining 2 files to become 1 and when you run the combined file, it will by default display the picture. To listen to the audio that is embedded into the picture file, you'll need to manually load the combined file into Winamp.Here's the test I did.

1. Combine audio (.mp3) with picture (.gif)I use the command "copy picture.gif /b + audio.mp3 /b combined.gif" in DOS prompt

I look in my C: drive and now I have a new file "combined.gif"I run the combined.gif file and it display the same picture as picture.gif.I run Winamp and manually load the combined.gif, I am able to play the audio.mp3 sound. I tried to load combined.gif file into Windows Media Player and I can only see the picture.gif. No sound at all. Looks like Winamp can support this feature but not Windows Media Player.

2. Combine audio (.wav) with picture (.gif)I use the same picture.gif but now I am combining the picture file with a .wav sound file. Wav is another type of sound format.Used the same command "copy picture.gif /b + audio.wav /b combined.gif" in DOS prompt. I ran combined.gif and it is able to display the picture.gif picture file. Tried to load it into Winamp, doesn't play this time. Loaded the combined.gif into Windows Media Player, it also only display the picture but no sound.Looks like only .mp3 sound format is supported.

3. Combine audio (.mp3) with picture (.jpg)Since only mp3 works, we'll try combining mp3 with another type of picture format with is JPG.Used the same command "copy picture.jpg /b + audio.mp3 /b combined.jpg" in DOS prompt. Ran the combined.jpg and it displayed the picture.jpg. Then I tried loading the combined.jpg into Winamp, and it played the music. Again, loaded combined.jpg into Windows Media Player, I can only see the picture but no music.

From the test above, I believe that hiding audio inside picture can only work when you embed MP3 audio into picture file. I also believe that other picture format such as TIFF, PNG or Bitmap will work.Tom Scott explains that the GIF format allows for an "application extension block" - an arbitrary section for applications that isn't checked by the GIF parser.

Meanwhile, Winamp and other MP3 players ignore all data in the file that isn't marked as an MP3 block. The result: the picture viewer ignores the music, and the MP3 player ignores the picture.Eventhough he only mentioned GIF, but I tested on JPG and it works as well.

If you're on a Linux box, you can do it by using the command "cat picture.gif sound.mp3 > combined.gif"

Hard Disk and Partitions:-Partitioning is a process of dividing the Hard disk into several chunks, and use any one of the partition to install OS or use two or more partitions to install multiple OSes.But you can always have one partition, and use up the entire Hard disk space to install a single OS, but this will become data management nightmare for users of large Hard disks.This is where advantage of partitioning lie!

Now, because of the structure of the Master Boot Record (MBR), you can have only four partitions, and these four partitions are called Primary Partitions.Again, If we have a large hard disk, we can not have only four primary partitions, hence Extended Partition is introduced. This Extended Partition is not a usable partition by itself, but it’s like a “container” and it is used to hold Logical Drives!That is this Extended Partition can be subdivided into multiple logical partitions.In order to boot into a Partition, it must be designated as bootable partition or Active Partition.

Active Partition is that partition which is flagged as bootable or which contains OS, this is generally a Primary Partition.

Boot Records: Master, Partition, Extended, Logical Extended:-

Master Boot Record (MBR):-
MBR is a small 512 bytes partition which is at the first physical sector of the hard disk. The location is denoted as CHS 0,0,1 meaning 0th Cylinder, 0th Head and 1st Sector. MBR contains a small program known as bootstrap program which is responsible for booting into any OSes. MBR also contains a table known as Partition Table.This Partition Table is a table which lists the available Primary Partitions in the hard disk. So it can have only four entries. This rises another question, what if we have more than four partitions? This is solved by Extended Partition principle. Partition Table considers whole Extended Partition as one Primary partition and lists it in the table!So a Partition
Table can have two possible entries:-
1] up to 4 Primary Partitions
2] up to 3 Primary Partitions and 1 Extended Partition.(Total not exceeding 4)

Partition Boot Sector (PBR):- This is the logical first sector, that is sector at the start of a Primary Partition. This is also 512 byte area, which contains some programs to initialize or run OS files.All Primary Partitions have it’s own PBRs.

Extended Boot Sector (EBR):- This is the logical first sector, that is the sector at the start of the Extended Partition. This EBR contains a Partition Table, which lists the available Logical Partitions inside Extended Partition. That is it contains the Starting addresses of each Logical Partitions.

Logical Extended Boot Sector (LEBR):- This is the logical first sector residing at the start of each Logical Partition. This is similar to PBR for Primary Partitions.

Single OS Boot Process:-Whenever PC is turned ON, BIOS takes the control, and it performs a lot of operations. It checks the Hardware, Ports etc and finally it loads the MBR program into memory (RAM).Now, MBR takes control of the booting process.
Functions of MBR, when there is only one OS is installed in the system are as given below:-
1] The boot process starts by executing code in the first sector of the disk, MBR.

2] The MBR looks over the partition table to find the Active Partition.

3] Control is passed to that partition's boot record (PBR) to continue booting.

4] The PBR locates the system-specific boot files (such as Win98's io.sys or WinXP’s ntoskrnl).

5] Then these boot files continue the process of loading and initializing the rest of the OS.

Multiple OS Boot Process:-Whenever there are multiple OSes, be it multiple Windows or Windows with Linux, then Boot process will be slightly different.

Actually, there can be two different types of Boot Process in multiple OS environment, Microsoft way and Non-Microsoft way (or Third Party Boot Loader way!).

Microsoft way:- Microsoft Master Boot loaders doesn’t recognize other types of OSes like Linux (in default, that is!), hence using Microsoft MBR in the presence of Linux is ruled out.Consider the case that (this is the general case), there is one Primary partition and some Logical Partitions inside Extended Partition. Now if Win98 is installed in the Primary Partition, and afterwards WinXP is installed in a Logical Partition, then theoretically both OS should have their own Boot Records, i.e PBR for Win98 and LEBR for WinXP, which contain program to boot the respective OS, so that each individual OS can be booted up by the MBR by passing control to respective PBR of the OS as described in previous section.But this does not happen in Microsoft Boot loader! It does a peculiar thing, that it always considers the current Active Partition as the default System/Boot Partition.

That is Primary Partition in which Win98 was installed is the Active Partition, then when WinXP is installed another partition, instead of writing the code for booting in it's partition, WinXP writes the code in current Active Partition (that is, where Win98 is installed)! Program responsible for loading the WinXP is ntldr standing for NTLoader. Theoretically, this should be in it’s partition, but this copied to that of Win98.

Then files responsible for Win98 booting is combined into a single file called bootsect.dos and this is also placed in the Win98 partition.Then, WinXP creates another file called boot.ini which contains the names of Microsoft OSes installed and path for System files of each OS.

After all this prelims, Windows multiboot can be represented as below:-

1] When BIOS hands over control to Microsoft MBR , this program looks into Partition Table for Active Partition.

2] Then it hands over the control to the PBR of Active Partition. In this case, the Active Partition is where Win98 was installed.

3] But Win98 PBR has been altered by WinXP, and it no longer contains Win98 boot program (like io.sys or msdos.sys). But it contains ntldr! Peculiarity is that one OS’s Boot program is in another OS’s Partition!

4]ntldr looks into boot.ini file and finds out the Microsoft OSes installed in the System and displays the option menu.

5] When user slects Win98, the file bootsect.dos (which is in same partition) is executed, and if WinXP is selected, ntoskrnl is executed (which is in another partition!).The good thing about Microsoft way is that, it’s very easy to configure (you don’t have to configure at all!).

But the bad thing about Microsoft MBR is that, the two OSes are not independent of each other.It is because, that Microsoft MBR always boots into the Active Partion (that is it always boots into Win98 Partition, but executes WinXP program!) and from here other OSes are loaded.This does not provide flexibility of installing multiple Microsoft OSes in a random order, because here older version of OS should be installed first and then newer versions of OSes should be installed.

This boot process also has two limitations:-

1] There can be only one Real Mode DOS based OSes like Win95/Win98 along with NT based OSes. If you want both Win95, Win98 with any NT based OS, then it’s simply not possible.

2]Microsoft MBR looks for Active Status in Primary Partitions only and not in Logical Partitions. This means, Microsoft OSes should be installed in Primary Partitions only if it should be bootable (For this reason itself, WinXP boot file ntldr is placed in Primary Partition of Win98 instead of it’s own Logical Partition).

But this has led to misconception that only OSes in Primary Partitions can be booted. But by replacing Microsoft MBR by any other sophisticated MBR program which also looks for Active Status in Logical Drives, we can boot into OSes which are in Logical Drives directly. This is where third party Boot Loaders come into picture!

Non-Microsoft way:- Third-party Boot Loader load before the OS, so they are independent of the OS. Therefore, they work fine with all versions of Windows and DOS.

In this system, installing multiple OSes is conceptually simple. First make as many Primary Partitions and Logical Partition as you want. Then set the status of one of the Partition as “Active”, and install on OS.

After this set the status of that partition as “Hidden” (or “Inactive” ) and set another Partition as “Active” and install another OS and this can be done for all Partitions. By this older versions of Windows can be installed after the installation of new ones.Then Third Party Boot Loader reads all Partitions (including Logical Partitions)from the Partition Table and provides with an option of OSes to boot.

The functions of a Third Party Boot Loader can be stated as below:-

1] Displays a list of all OSes present in both Primary and Logical Partitions.

2] When an user selects one OS, Boot Loader makes the Partition of that OS as Active, and passes the control to it.This step is the most important deviation from Microsoft way, because in Microsoft MBR, the “Active” Partition always remains same and after booting into it, OSes in other (Logical) Partitions are booted.But here, a Partition is flagged as Active at the time of the selection by the user,by this way, any OS can be booted directly, by toggling it’s Inactive/Active Status when an user selects it.

3] Then, the Boot Sector of the corresponding OS takes control and loads the OS. This Boot Sector may be PBR of a Primary Partition or LEBR of a Logical Extended Partition.By this way, each OS remains independent of each other. That is, boot programs (ntldr) of WinXP can remain in WinXP’s partition and Win98 boot programs (io.sys, msdos.sys) can remain in it’s partition..

Since Third Party Boot Loaders are independent of OS, they support all type of OSes like Windows, Linux, Unix, BeOS etc.A good Boot Loader is XOSL, which has a graphical interface and supports upto 24 OSes and it can also boot OSes installed in Logical Partitions.Download XOSL

How to re-install windows without loosing anything

Over time, Windows loses stability. If you keep a computer for more than two years, at some point you're going to have to bite the bullet and reinstall Windows from scratch. But contrary to popular belief, you won't have to reformat your hard drive (with one exception, discussed below).

The bad stuff you need to get rid of is all in your Windows folder.Before you begin, gather your Windows and application CD-ROMs. Back up your data files (just to be safe), and then clear two days off your calendar. If everything goes smoothly, you can reinstall Windows in a few hours. But you have to assume something will go wrong: You may not be able to find a necessary CD, or data won't be where you thought it was, or something will simply refuse to work.

There's a difference between a repair reinstall and a complete reinstall. Though a repair (also called a refresh) will let you keep your current settings, a complete reinstall will give you a truly fresh version of Windows. Repairs are fast and easy, but they don't fix anywhere near as many problems. The instructions below are for total reinstalls, except where noted.Your Vendor's Restore CDMost computers ship with a vendor-specific restore CD rather than with a Microsoft Windows CD-ROM. (If your PC came with a Microsoft Windows CD, or if you bought a retail copy of Windows, skip to the section for your version.)

Some restore CDs give you all the options of a full Microsoft Windows CD, but with better instructions and the convenience of having all the right hardware drivers. Others can do nothing except reformat your hard drive and restore it to the condition it was in when you bought the PC. (This case is the exception I mentioned above that requires a reformat.)If your restore CD is reformat-only, back up your data files to a network or a removable medium before reinstalling Windows. If you use Windows 98 or Me, back up C:\My Documents, plus the folders inside C:\Windows discussed in the 98*steroidsRgangstaa section below. If you have Windows 2000 or XP, back up C:\Documents and Settings.

Also back up any other folders in which you store your data files.Windows 98 and ME CDsThese Windows versions keep some important data inside your soon-to-be-erased Windows folder, so you need to copy several of its subfolders to another location. Right-click My Computer and select Explore. Double-click the C: drive icon (in Me, you may then have to click View the entire contents of this drive). Right-click in the right pane and select New, Folder.

Name the new folder oldstuff.Go to the Windows folder (you might have to click View the entire contents of this folder), hold down Ctrl, and select the following subfolders: All Users, Application Data, Desktop, Favorites, Local Settings, Profiles, SendTo, and Start Menu. If you don't see them all, select View, Folder Options (Tools, Folder Options in Me), click the View tab, select Show all files, and click OK. (If you still don't see them all, don't worry about it.)

Press Ctrl and drag the folders to C:\oldstuff (see FIGURE 1).Restart Windows with a start-up disk in your floppy drive. (To make a start-up floppy, insert a disk, select Start, Settings, Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs, click Startup Disk, Create Disk, and follow the prompts.) At the Startup Menu, select Start computer with CD-ROM support. While the drivers load, insert your Windows CD-ROM.Unless you're doing a repair reinstall, type the command c:\windows\command\deltree /y c:\windows and press Enter.

Deleting your old files could take time, but the /y switch suppresses confirmation prompts, so take a break.When you're back at the A: prompt, type x:setup, where x is your CD drive letter (it's likely one letter past what it usually is in Windows, so if it's D: in Windows, it's probably E: here). Press Enter and follow the prompts.Once you're back in Windows, reinstall your graphics card driver. If you have Windows set up for more than one user, you'll also have to re-create each account. Select Start, Settings, Control Panel, Users to do so.

It's important that the user names match those in the old installation. If you're not sure, open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\oldstuff\profiles. There you'll find a folder for each registered user name (see FIGURE 2). Don't worry about passwords. Log off and log back on as each user. When you're done, log off and back on one more time, but instead of choosing a user name and a password, press Esc to enter Windows without being a specific user.Select Start, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt (in Windows 98) or Start, Programs, Accessories, MS-DOS Prompt (in Windows Me). Type xcopy c:\oldstuff\*.* c:\windows /s /h /r /c and press Enter (if you want to know what the xcopy switches do, enter the command xcopy /?). When xcopy asks if it should overwrite a file, press a for All.

When xcopy is through, reboot and log on (as a particular user, if necessary). Open My Documents to make sure all your personal files are where they belong, including your Internet Explorer favorites and your custom Start menu shortcuts.Now skip ahead to "Finishing the Job."Windows 2000 and XP CDsBoot your computer with your Windows CD-ROM inserted. When you get the 'Press any key to boot from CD' message, do so. (If you don't see that message before Windows starts, restart Windows, press the key you're prompted to enter for your PC Setup program, and change the boot order so your CD drive is first.)At the 'Welcome to Setup' screen, press Enter.

The R (repair) option takes you to the Recovery Module, which is useful if Windows won't boot, but it's no help with a reinstallation. Soon you'll be told that there's already a Windows installation on the computer. Press r for a repair reinstall or Esc to begin a complete, destructive one. For a complete restore, select your C: partition and press Enter. When you get the warning that says an operating system is on that partition, press c. When you are asked your partition preference, select Leave the current file system intact (no changes). When you're told that a Windows folder (or Winnt folder for Windows 2000) already exists, press l ('ell') to delete it and create a new one. Follow the series of prompts.

When the installation program asks for your name, enter temp.Once the installation is complete, your system will reboot into Windows, and you'll be logged on as user Temp. If the screen is difficult to read, reinstall your graphics card driver.If you are reinstalling Windows XP, skip to "For Both Windows XP and 2000."If you're reinstalling Windows 2000, log off as Temp and back on as Administrator. Now log off and on again, this time as Temp. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Documents and Settings. One of the subfolders will be named Administrator. Another will be named something like Administrator.computername.Select Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt. Type cd "\documents and settings" and press Enter. Then type xcopy administrator\*.* administrator.computername /s /h /r /c, replacing computername with the last part of that folder's name (after "Administrator.") in Documents and Settings.

Now press Enter, and when you're asked about overwriting files or folders, press a for All.If you have any users on the old installation besides Administrator, continue with the "For Both Windows XP and 2000" section. Otherwise, open Windows Explorer and make sure your data files are where they belong. Then go to Control Panel's Users and Passwords applet and delete the user Temp before skipping to "Finishing the Job."For Both Windows XP and 2000Reopen Windows Explorer. Select your C: drive (you may have to click Show the contents of this folder). Right-click in the right pane and select New, Folder. Name the new folder oldstuff. In the left pane, choose the Documents and Settings folder.

It should have subfolders for each user from the previous install, plus one for Temp and a few others. Move the folders for your previous user names to oldstuff.Select Start, Control Panel, User Accounts (Start, Settings, Control Panel, Users and Passwords in Windows 2000). Create an account for each user who was registered before the reinstall. Be sure to use the exact names. They are the same names as the folders you just moved to oldstuff (as shown in FIGURE 2). In Windows XP, at least one user must have administrator privileges.Log off and back on as each user, before logging back on as Temp. Make sure that you select Log Off and not Switch User at Windows XP's Log Off dialog box (this isn't an issue in Win 2000).

Log on as Temp, select Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt (in XP, Start, All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt), type xcopy c:\oldstuff\*.* "c:\documents and settings" /s /h /r /c, and press Enter. Press a when asked if you want to overwrite a file. Log off Temp and log on to each restored account to make sure everyone's documents and data are where they belong. Log on as an administrator and run Control Panel's User Accounts applet again to remove the user Temp.Finishing the JobNow you've got Windows going, but not much else. You may have to reinstall your printer, sound card, and so on.

Luckily, if a driver for the gadget came on your Windows or vendor restore CD, it was probably reinstalled automatically.You'll have to reinstall your applications to reintroduce them to Windows. Some of their settings will not be changed by the reinstallation, but those that were stored in the Registry were wiped out.Once your Internet connection is running again, browse to Windows Update and download all critical updates for your version (see FIGURE 3). Then visit the sites of your hardware vendors to update your drivers.

After the reinstall, some of your data may not show up where it should. Search for it in both your Application Data and oldstuff folders, and see if you can move it to the folder in which Windows or your apps are looking for it. If you find a folder called Identities with two subfolders whose names are long and indecipherable, try moving the contents of one to the other and see if your data reappears.You've probably guessed that the final step is deleting the c:\oldstuff folder--and the Administrator folder in Windows 2000. Make this the very last step, however. Wait a couple of days, weeks, or even months until you're confident that all of your needed files are accessible.
